Every Day is Earth Day
Our 2021 field partners Fazenda Sertão, in the state of Rio de Janeiro have begun the restoration of an endangered species palm Euterpe edulis Martius within their established farm. Commonly known as juçara, jussara, açaí-do-sul or palmiteiro, it’s a palm tree native to the Atlantic Forest. Its fruits are highly appreciated in cooking and have high nutritional value. As it is a plant that grows in a more shaded area of the forest, it is being introduced in agroforestry systems that are already in place, which guarantees that they will be cared for together with the other species that are present in the planted areas.
As an established organic farm using syntropic agroforestry methods, and educating their local communities, we see great potential. Together, we are now creating a master plan to scale up their agroforestry plantings.
Our former field partners from PRETATERRA have been engaged in teaching and implementation of Multistrata Agroforestry. They are now able to massively scale their positive impact thanks to European Foundation funding brought to them through one of our advisors.
We supported a project in Pinuya, state of Acre to plan and build their own tree nursery that will enable the reforestation and regeneration of degraded land into a food forest. The nursery build was scheduled to begin in June 2021.
The Pinuya village and its surrounding areas were hit hard with heavy flooding at the beginning of 2021, with the neighboring town of Tarauáca under water, supplies were not available and the road to the village was impassable. Since drier weather has arrived supplies and materials are available and progress can be made.
